Position title: Bilingual (English-Spanish) Community Organizer

Position type: Part-time at an average of 20-25 hours per week. The position has the potential to become full-time in the future.  The position includes time in Tri-Valley CAREs’ Livermore office and in western San Joaquin County.


SummaryDo you have a passion for environmental justice and empowering communities to create positive change? The Bilingual Community Organizer position centrally involves writing, speaking and translation services in English and Spanish. The individual holding this position is responsible for building community capacity and empowering residents in western San Joaquin County to better involve them in environmental decision-making regarding the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Site 300 nuclear weapons experimental facility near Tracy, CA. The Bilingual Community Organizer conducts targeted outreach in neighborhoods in western San Joaquin County, with a focus on Spanish-speakers and youth in Tracy. The individual holding this position will build and maintain relationships with governmental and non-governmental organizations and Latinx community leaders to increase their understanding of the Superfund cleanup of toxic and radioactive pollutants and other programs at Site 300. The Bilingual Community Organizer reports directly to Tri-Valley CAREs’ Executive Director. Specific duties and responsibilities are outlined below.

About Tri-Valley CAREs: Since 1983, Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment) has strengthened U.S. and global security by stopping the further development of nuclear weapons and working tirelessly for their elimination. Concerned neighbors living around the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Main Site in Livermore, CA and its Site 300 near Tracy, CA founded the organization. Both of these locations are on the EPA’s “Superfund” list of most contaminated sites in the nation. Tri-Valley CAREs monitors environmental cleanup throughout the nuclear weapons complex, with a special focus on Livermore Lab and the surrounding communities. The group’s vision for a “green lab” provides tangible steps to move the country and the world away from reliance on nuclear weapons and toward a more sustainable and just future. www.trivalleycares.org

Primary duties and responsibilities:

• Develop written information in English and Spanish for use in outreach campaigns, including flyers, fact sheets, newsletter articles, and letters to the editor; make community presentations and provide translation.

• Develop social media and web content in English and Spanish.

• Conduct bilingual outreach, including neighborhood walks, workshops and issue trainings, with a focus on Spanish-speakers and youth, to educate residents about environmental hazards and Superfund cleanup at Site 300.

• Build community-based leadership with bilingual skill training in public speaking, letter writing, advocacy and/or media.

• Speak, table, and/or participate in community events relevant to Site 300 outreach, including the annual Cinco de Mayo festival in Stockton, sponsored by El Concilio, and the annual Mexican Independence Day festival in Tracy, sponsored by Southside Community.

• Facilitate meetings between Latinx and youth residents, environmental regulators and/or elected officials on issues of concern to community members.

• Engage residents in advocacy campaigns to strengthen environmental regulations, enforcement mechanisms and public participation practices involving Site 300; conduct media events in support of these campaigns.

• Manage the group’s Youth Video Contest to involve young people between the ages of 10 and 30-years old.

General duties:

• Attend the group’s monthly meetings; participate in two group events during the year.

• Represent Tri-Valley CAREs in the California Environmental Justice Coalition.

• Facilitate meetings of the Tracy Environmental Advisory Committee for Site 300.

• Other duties as assigned by the organization’s Executive Director.

Required qualifications:

• Bilingual in Spanish and English; demonstrated ability to speak, translate and write in both languages.

• Strong communication skills; able to work with diverse constituencies.

• Able to work as part of a team on some occasions and with limited supervision on others.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, InDesign, Photoshop and/or Illustrator (or similar program), email, and common social media platforms.

• Strong commitment to Tri-Valley CAREs’ mission and goals.

• Ability and willingness to travel within San Joaquin County and nearby counties; position requires a flexible schedule to accommodate outreach opportunities including some evening and weekend hours.

• At least one-year minimum of community organizing or equivalent experience.

• Residency in or near San Joaquin County or a willingness to relocate.

Preferred qualifications:

• Community roots in Tracy or western San Joaquin County.

• Degree in communication, environmental science, social science, or another relevant field.

Working environment: The position is based out of Tri-Valley CAREs’ office in Livermore and requires working in the office 10-12 hours/week on average. The balance of the time will be spent in San Joaquin County.

CompensationPay is $17 – $20/hour depending on experience. Medical benefit is available after 30-days. 1-week paid annual vacation is available after 6 months.
